Background: Sarcopenia and obesity are caused by reduced physical activity leading to frailty. This study objectively compares the patterns of sedentary behavior and physical activity according to body composition phenotypes.
Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 109 community-dwelling frail elderly women according to Fried¡¯s frailty phenotype (mean age=80.8¡¾2.8 years). Appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASM Index) and body fat percentage were assessed by DXA, which were used to categorize phenotypes into either normal, sarcopenic, obese, or sarcopenic-obese. Physical activity (PA) was categorized as either sedentary, light PA, or moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) using a triaxial accelerometer.
Results: Participants wore the accelerometer for 766.3¡¾100.2 min/day. Participants spent 57.2% of their daily time in sedentary, 40.0% doing light PA, and 2.7% doing MVPA. Body fat percentage showed a positive correlation with time spent in sedentary (r=0.23, P<0.05) and low PA (r=-0.25, P<0.01). However, no significant relationship was observed between ASM index and PA patterns. The time spent in either sedentary or light PA were significantly greater among the sarcopenic-obese group compared to the normal (P<0.016), but no similar significance was noted among the sarcopenic or the obese group. There was no significant difference among the body composition phenotype groups regarding the time spent doing MVPA.
Conclusion: The frail elderly women spend the majority of their time leading a sedentary lifestyle, and both sedentary behavior and light PA are more strongly related to obesity than time spent doing MVPA.
